Blazing Speed: Verizon FiOS

Now that Verizon has there new FiOS service available in my area, I had it installed. Let me tell you this is a totally different consumer Verizon, from the customer service to the Tech's it was a pleasurable experience. Shocking yes, I know.

Since I have underground wires, all new things are a bitch to get to the house... Verizon needed to run a conduit pipe to the house under the grass, under the brick flower bed and make it look nice in the garden.... Yes, I was concerned.... Before any work gets done a field engineer, arrived at my house, the kicker a day I was off and about an hour after I returned his call so far... So good. He arrives and draw a diagram of my house lot, grass, fence, flower box.. Etc... Does his little measurement procedure and then sits with me to explain how all will be run. What will be affected and how much grass with be ripped up. All and all not bad, for 30MB I will accept some dead grass (which Verizon did fix, within 2 days of the pipe run)

Now the day of the install arrives, and the Tech is on time 8:30am, I did not anticipate it going the 6 hours they alot, especially since I had the whole inside the house all ready pre wired with the Cat5e for phone and data waiting for them. Which of course they loved, easier job. So the install go smooth, installs the fiber to the house, cuts through the brick and the foundation no problem, gets the box in place, battery backup, power (which I also ran new BX and a plug for them the day before) . They do the phone switch to the new Fiber network, and cut the old copper connections away from the house. Still not problem, all the phones work, now its time to check the internet access... This is where is gets a bit off...

I did not want to use the free router they provide, a D-Link 624, I have a linksys in place, hacked with the latest Talisman firmware from
Sveasoft, we do a speed test, and Fuck we are well bellow the 30mb...Grr, so the tech calls the support office to have the Line checked and make sure I am setup for the higher speed, the girl was helpful and says the account is good... So we move to the all famous Desktop Support, we tried a bunch of "optimization" setting for the network card, no dice... So I break out a nice new Wrt54GS version 4, to try a non hacked version of the hardware... BAM!!!! 30MB So I am like FUCK!!!! But I tell the tech its not his issues and sign the work order that I am happy and hey is off to head home before the snow get him.

To end this long story; its the sveasoft firmware, the PPPoE module needs work to achieve the speeds download though the upload is fine. When this is available, hopefully soon I will be back in business 100%, for now I have a 2 router config going to maximize the speed where it needs to be, and still alot me the features I hacked it for in the first place...

Either way I am happy..... ;-)

Your hosting PDZ tonight. That game is the most fun I've had online in a long time. It's "infectious."

I've been waiting for Fios to become available in my area. What are they charging you per month? Do they offer an IP-TV service yet?

FIOS SUCKS!
I had FIOS installed at my home last week. It was a two day process and I still don't have phone service on my land line and have been calling for days. The people are rude and I haven't gotten a straight answer from anyone in days. I am at the end of my rope. I would stick with Cable if I were you! Customer support is customer avoidance system.

To those who are excited about this there are things you need to know about Fios and verizon. If you use any phone service such as Vonage you will receive terrible customer service. When you call them, the first thing they ask you is for your phone number. If you do not have a verizon phone then you will likely get shuffled around from rep to rep and put on endless hold. Also they give you the speed but don’t want you to actually use the bandwidth, they traffic shape and will cut you off if they detect torrent traffic, even if it's legitimate. Over a year ago they mis-billed my account; after they caught the mistake my service was restored. (After hours and hours of getting shuffled around and getting disconnected) Then two weeks ago I woke up to check my email and found the service was off again. After several hours on the phone, I finally get told that the billing error had resurfaced; it would most likely take a month for fraud services to resolve the issue. No apologies for the mistake or the terrible service. I had to sign up for RR just to get service back and my home phone working again.

I have just spent the last two weeks trying to get my fios internet operating. So far: 8 calls to their help line, 3 different routers and 3 visits from so called technicians. Today, the ONT box reverted to battery with no apparent reason. I could write a book about the quality of the equipment and the incompetitance of their personal. Think twice before you listen to their siren call.

FIOS is horrendous. It is unreliable and Verizon FIOS service is the worst I have seen. We switched from Cox cable beacuse of the FIOS picture quality hype and perhaps lulled by supposedly better service from a telephone carrier. We were dead wrong. The picture quality is not much better and they need to figure out the high failure rate. As for service, after long waits on the phone and repeated broken appointments from Verizon, the total wait is longer than 5 days. And we through this twice.
Happy to be back with Cox.

Wow... People still find my blog..

Sorry to hear FioS did not work out for you...

I still have no issues, neither does the 10 people who I recommended it to.

I guess in the NYC area they are just better with better people.

I live in central NJ. Here the FIOS tech service is non-existent. They never answer the phone within 30 minutes, and often you get into a loop to start over making choices. They should add choice $: Leave your cable boxes at the curb for pickup if you are thoroughly disgusted with FIOS people.
Actually the people are polite, but they can only say "I am sorry you are having trouble...but I cannot help you...someone else messed up your account..if you stay on hold for another hour or so, if you are not cut-off, someone else will tell you the same thing!!!!!

FIOS has so mangled my account they think I have 5 boxes for my 4 TVs--they also think my account is discontinued, although I get a bill every month. There is no follow-up on promises made by people in the billing department or the tech help department--and these people can only be reached after at least 30 minutes on hold--when reached they politely say that someone else is responsible for the lack of service and offer to transfer you. If transferred, you will probably be cut off after a long time on hold.
DO NOT GET FIOS TV--ANY OTHER COMPANY IS BETTER--EVEN ADELPHIA WHOSE PRINCIPALS ARE IN THE PENITENTIARY FOR FRAUD.

I called Verizon FIOS to order phone, internet, and cable prior to my move in. My Consumer Order Summary was dated 3-28-08, and the scheduled installation date was 4-7-08. I reviewed the e-mail and all looked well. I move into my new house and install date comes. They setup an 8 AM-noon window. I already had the Optical Network Terminal unit (ONT) in my house, so I figured this would be cake for them. I am a Sys Admin at an ISP, so the internet stuff I could do myself with ease.

On install day, no one showed, no one called. I had my mobile with me at ALL times. So around 1:30 PM I called Verizon to see what was going on. If something came up, I had a week off to move in and if they needed to come by in a day or two, I was totally cool with that. After about an hour on hold I got in touch with a “state level” dispatcher. That said that there were “no facilities available for my order” and I was called. Nope, I wasn’t called; they did have my cell (which I had with me all of the time) in their records. I wanted them to come out later in the week if possible since I was home. They said that their next available time for me was 4-12-08, which was a day where I was going to a wedding. The next available time after that was at the end of the month, on a work day for me.

Basically because they did not show up, or even notify me with a reason, they put me at the back of the line. I was trying to escalate my request and the support only gave me unreasonable dates and that “no facilities available for my order” BS. I later wanted to get my copper line put back so I could at least get phone service, and after a long wait in hold they gave me the end of the month as a date. Basically I was being run around in circles and being shoved to the end of the line because Verizon screwed up my installation. I was told the only way I could get it sooner is if I “knew an installer who’d do me a favor,” and I was pretty much screwed with the window of time I had to get the service installed. The salesperson fed me a load of bull and the installer didn’t even call me with a reason. I tried to figure out what “no facilities available for my order” meant, and why this was such a problem since I already had the ONT in my house. Half of their work was already done.

The same day, I called a local cable company who installed my phone, internet, and cable the next day. They showed up on time and did the normal pre and post appointment verification. I unplugged the ONT in my house and let the battery go out. Verizon gave me such a lousy customer experience I swore I would never do business with them, and be sure to let other people know about their awful customer service and commitments they setup and do not honor. Verizon screwed up prior when they bought Bell Atlantic, and screwed up our perfectly find DSL service I had around 98/99. My money is going to a competitor, and Verizon won’t see it because they have abysmal customer service. I am certainly interested in fiber optic lines connected to my house, but so long as Verizon is the only provider, I will happily do without.

I also work for verizon and fios is a good product if installed right. The problem right now is more and more copper personnel is coming into fios and the mangers are more concern about how fast you install a job rather then how good you install it. I will not rush and I believe in providing fios customer with excellent service, so they will be glad to tell their friends and family how good their install was.

Placed the order on 7/16/08 with an install date of 8/08. Confirmed the install date on 7/24. The morning of the eighth and no one showed. After 3 hours of the royal runaround and two phones in my hand to reach anyone of intelligence, they admitted my order was lost. Rescheduled the install for 10/4! Told them it was not acceptable (how many days do I need to take off?) and within three hours they called back and moved the date to 8/17. Confirmed the date via email and on their "Whats next" web site. Everything was cool........than an email was received two days before the install stating that the install date was moved to 9/17/08. On the phone again with the search of intelligence at Verizon began once again and so did the royal run around. No intelligence was found, so its good bye. In comparison, Time Warner showed up the same day to fix the internet connection and to reach someone was a snap.Time Warner always showed up on time for an install and repair.I am not a lover of Time Warner but at least they can address problems.

I had FIOS installed in my business in May 08. I can't decide if it is slower than a tortoise or a rock. Half of the time it doesn't give me business email at all and the other half it rivels the blazing speed of cold molasses on a horizontal surface. For almost a solid month, I couldn't even get my email and I do half of my business online. I have logged hundreds of hours with tech support who are neither techie or supportive. However, at the height of my frustration, they offered me a $15 a mo. service contract with (they say) real FIOS tech support. Gee, no one told me that before I installed! Billing is also a delight. Hours online followed by no follow through. I am in the MD/DC suburbs. Talk with lots of people before you switch. It is NOT as advertised.

Verizon as a company and especially as related to FIOS has the worst consumer relations of any company I have ever dealt with. I am, now about 8 months later, still waiting for my promotional gift. They take the information on the phone and tell me all is correct and I will hear from them in 2 days. I never do. I call and the same thing happens. I ask for a manager and told nobody is there "I am the highest person here now." I write to the CEO and get no response. I asked for someone to write to and am told there is nobody. This is aside from some major problems with their system. Like when there is a power outage the phone works, but will not ring. In my area there are auto calls for emergencies that would never get answered. I have now written to Consumer Protection and they are evaluating the case. This is the worst experience I have ever had with any company.

Verizon fios is total crap. just because i need static ip i had to go with business acount at my home. techsupport is mostly clueless, beyond basic dynamic installation, have no clue why people purchase static IP in the first place, after 2 days of hastle finally it started working with 5 static ip using actiontec router, when I try to switch to Cisco pix firewall it just won't work, spent two days with Cisco and verizon finally switched to action tech router. earier this week decided to upgrade to 13 IP from 5 static ip, even action tech router would not work, spent again three days so far had two router replaced, still it would not work .. as we speak i am waiting for third level support who should really be first level to call me back.... already decided to dump verizon and move to cable modem as i never had any problem with them.
